An ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit) is a smaller, secondary housing unit located on the same property as a primary residence. It is often referred to as a "granny flat," "in-law suite," or "secondary unit." ADUs can be attached to the main house, such as a basement or garage conversion, or they can be a detached structure like a small standalone house.
These units typically have their own living spaces, including a kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom, and they offer a way to increase housing options on a single property. ADUs are becoming increasingly popular due to their affordability and potential for providing additional rental income or housing for family members.
California Government Code Section 65852.150 states that the California Legislature has recognized that permitting Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) in areas zoned for single-family and multifamily use contributes to the availability of additional rental housing. This is seen as a crucial step in addressing the state's housing needs. Over time, State ADU Law has been updated to enhance its ability to generate more housing units. The City of Shasta Lake offers Pre-Designed ADU Plans and encourages our citizens to consult the Development Services Department early in the planning process.
